trip to another country to end up making a fool of yourself in front of
thousands of people on the internet is a record that few manage to break, but
two visitors in Osaka took it very seriously. During a live broadcast in the
heart of the city, a Japanese streamer was the victim of a racist provocation
by two foreigners, only this time the content creator decided not to bow her
head and confronted the aggressors in real time.
The
incident occurred while the young woman was broadcasting her usual tour through
the busy streets of the city of Osaka. At that moment, two men who identified
themselves as Italian tourists approached him out of nowhere. Without the
slightest embarrassment, one of them stared into the lens and proceeded to
stretch his eyes with his fingers, making the typical and unbearable mockery
towards Asian features while his companion remained by his side witnessing the
scene.
Far from
being scared, turning off the camera or swallowing her anger, the streamer
decided to keep the shot focused on them and confront them instantly. Quite
serenely but firmly, the girl questioned them head-on how brave they felt
making those kinds of signs while they were recording them and why they
bothered to travel to Japan if they had so much contempt for the local people.
Neither of the two subjects apologized for the broadcast and the interaction
remained strictly verbal until both ended up walking away, allowing the live
broadcast to continue normally.
The clip of
the confrontation did not take long to spread on social networks, rekindling a
conversation that has been quite tense for months in the country of the rising
sun. With record numbers of international visitors throughout this year, the
inhabitants of large metropolises such as Osaka, Tokyo or Kyoto have reported a
constant increase in public disorder, lack of respect for local rules and
foolish behavior on the part of some travelers.
The growth
of international tourism has brought an important economic boost to the nation,
but also a notable wear and tear on the patience of the local population in the
face of unethical behavior. Cases like this are not isolated, since in the last
two years multiple videos have circulated of content creators and citizens
responding directly to foreigners who commit acts of harassment or discrimination
in public spaces. The streamer's decision not to remain silent reflects an
increasingly visible stance among young Japanese people, who prefer to expose
these attitudes live rather than allow disrespect to go unnoticed.
