Three Studio Ghibli films dominate at the box office after the reopening of theaters in Japan

The films Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away), Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä (Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind), and Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke), all three produced by Studio Ghibli, were reported to have dominated at the box office at the reopening of theaters in Japan, after the long season of forced closure that had to be implemented nationally in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The TOHO Cinemas cinema chain announced that it would hold a Studio Ghibli film festival in 372 theaters around Japan starting June 26, and would consist of the broadcast of four films. Additionally, there is another festival scheduled for films from Kyoto Animation studios.

The four films currently broadcast are:
  • Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa (Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind).
  • Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke).
  • Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Chihiro's Journey).
  • Ged Senki (Tales from Terramar).
Being Japan one of the three countries specifically excluded from the release of all Studio Ghibli movies on Netflix (in company with the United States and Canada), the Japanese audience really took this opportunity to see these feature films in theaters.
