During the "Manga Ookoku Tottori Seitan 99-nen Mizuki Shigeru Seitansai" broadcast, Toei Animation Studios announced that the most recent animated adaptation of the manga written and illustrated by Shigeru Mizuki, Gegege no Kitarou, will have a movie titled Kitarou Tanjou: Gegege no Nazo.
This film is part of the "four major projects" that will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of author Shigeru Mizuki, who also wrote the original work. Mizuki departed this life in 2015, at the age of 93.
On the other hand, the most recent series was, in fact, the sixth anime adaptation of this franchise, and aired between April 2018 and March 2020, with a total of ninety-seven episodes produced by Toei Animation studios, under the direction of Kouji Ogawa. Mizuki published the original manga between 1960 and 1969 in Japan.
The broadcast also revealed that the manga written and illustrated by Shigeru Mizuki, Akuma-kun, will have a new animation project. The project will feature direction by Fumitoshi Oizaki (Centaur no Nayami, Romeo × Juliet), while Hiroshi Ohnogi (Gegege no Kitarou, Noein - Mou Hitori no Kimi e) will handle the scripts. More details will be revealed soon.
