On the official site for the original anime of the Kyoto Animation studios , Tamako Market , it was announced that, in commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the transmission of the project, a "special project" is being prepared. It should be noted that January 9, 2023 marks ten years since the first episode of this series premiered in Japan , but no further details were revealed regarding this upcoming anniversary project.

A new anniversary promo visual was also revealed:

The original series was produced by Kyoto Animation studios , directed by Naoko Yamada , and written by Reiko Yoshida , for a total of twelve episodes. It also has a one-volume light novel adaptation that was written by Mutsuki Ichinose and illustrated by Yukiko Horiguchi (the designer of Lucky Star , K-On!, among others).

Just a year after the original series aired, the movie Tamako Love Story , a direct sequel to the story featured in the series, was produced. The film continued to be handled by the same production team, and was released alongside a short film titled Dera-chan of the Southern Islands , directed by Tatsuya Ishihara .

Finally, it should be noted that Naoko Yamada , the woman who directed this project as well as other Kyoto Animation hits like K-On! Koe no Katachi ( A Silent Voice ) and Liz to Aoi Tori ( Liz and the Blue Bird ), is now associated with Science SARU studios , with which it has produced The Heike Story series and other films already on their way to theaters from Japan. She was the youngest person to become a director within the ranks of Kyoto Animation , just four years after graduating from university.

Synopsis of Tamako Market

Within the Usagiyama shopping district is an eccentric but tight-knit community of business owners. Tamako Kitashirakawa, a clumsy but lovable teenager, belongs to a family of mochi bakers who own a quaint shop called Tama-ya. One day, Ella Tamako stumbles upon a talking bird that introduces itself as royalty from a faraway land. Dera Mochimazzi, as he calls himself, claims that he is looking for a bride for the prince of his country.

Intent on fulfilling her mission, Dera follows Tamako home and develops an addiction to mochi, causing her to become painfully overweight and subsequently unable to fly back to her homeland; thus, he settles in with Tamako's family and becomes the community's beloved pet. Meanwhile, Tamako's friend, Mochizou Ooji, continues to hide her true feelings for her. Her parents are fierce mochi rivals, but will it be enough to drive a wedge between Tamako and Mochizou? And what will happen to Dera's task of finding the destined bride of his prince?
