This article includes spoilers for the manga “Yofukashi no Uta (Call of the Night).” Reader discretion is advised.
After more than four years of serialization, the final chapter of the manga written and illustrated by Kotoyama , “ Yofukashi no Uta ( Call of the Night )” was published in the most recent edition of Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine . From previous chapters it had been inferred that the end of the story was going to be, at the very least, bittersweet, considering the author's background with “ Dagashi Kashi ”, and it seems that they were right to worry.
From previous chapters it had been established that
Nazuna Nanakusa had fallen completely in love with Kou Yamori, the protagonist,
which caused her to be afraid of biting him to drink his blood. Let's
remember that there was a rumor that if a vampire falls in love with a human
and sucks his blood, the human will die (the reverse version was also rumored,
where it would be the vampire who dies).
In the end, it became a situation that can be summed up like this: “ I want to love you and live my life with you, but if I do there is a chance that you will die .” Or as it was mentioned on social networks: Nazuna thinks that vampire life is boring (she had mentioned it in a previous chapter) and she does not want Kou to experience that eternal boredom.
With all this background, fans already expected that the ending of “Yofukashi no Uta (Call of the Night)” would not be completely satisfactory, and this seems to be the opinion of the majority. Although the final chapter has not been translated, we can see Nazuna and Kou together in a snowy area. In the final illustration, they both appear lying in the snow, and Kou proposes that they "pursue each other to death" while Nazuna introduces him as "her lover of his."
It is an open ending, since the romantic situation
between the two is not fully expressed (that is, it is not established
if they become a couple or what their status is, at least in the preliminary
translations), which has left a taste in the mouth, although sweet,
also bitter in the fans who followed this franchise for years:
- " It
was a great trip. Yofukashi no Uta has been with me since the pandemic
began, it was something so fun to read during the endless nights, I had so
many things to worry about, but the feeling I found when reading it made
me feel great, it made me forget a little that we were trapped in our houses,
because you know, the goal of the series was for Kou to go out all the
time. "It was a fun series, with many tear-jerking and funny moments,
with a whole cast of endearing characters ."
- « Thank
you Kou and Nazuna, you will be missed, and I am very grateful to Kotoyama
sensei, although I will never read Dagashi Kashi, I am looking forward to
reading his next work. Thanks to you too for being along for the ride, for
a series that was mostly improvised, it was amazing. My night has come to
an end, I hope the night has also come to an end for you ."
- " I
could have sworn we saw an adult Kou in some of the previous illustrations ."
- " I
really don't know what to think about it ."
- « I'm
glad to see one last look on Nazuna's face when she sees Kou. The last page
of them lying in the snow smiling is a nice way to end. I'm going to miss
this series, hopefully another season of anime, but for now it's good
night .'
- « Well,
this is not a bad ending, but it is not a happy one either, or so it
seems. I don't know how to feel about it .
- " Nazuna
said that they should keep meeting each other until they die, so I guess
when Kou is about to kick the bucket, that's when Nazuna will finally bite
him and they will die together ."
- « Then
why didn't Kou let it bite him? If the effects had worn off already, he
would have let her bite anyway. Just because a year has passed doesn't
mean she can't kill him by sucking her blood, which is why she said they
would spend the rest of her lives meeting each other again and again until
THEY died. Because once Kou is old and on his deathbed, Nazuna will go
with him ."
- « Why
doesn't anyone talk about how GIANT KOU'S HANDS ARE? Well, you know what
they say about boys with big hands… »
- « I
hate this ending so much, but to be honest, at least they are together
again .»
- " They
will stay together and she will bite him when he is older and they will
die together ."
- " Probably.
It is a semi-open ending, like Dagashi Kashi. It is open to interpretation
which this author is known for. I mean he's still half-vampire even after
4 years, he even says he learned to control it .'
- « Yes,
Nazuna said that they should play hide and seek until they die and Kou had
an exasperated reaction .»
- " I
mean, the ending could have been worse, so I don't really care about this ."
- I
don't know man, it seems a little disappointing. For me, a big fan of
romance, this is not good. In my opinion, the story reached its peak with
the conclusion of Mahiru and Hoshimi. The manga is still good, but the
relationship between Nazuna and Kou is not very well thought out .
- « That's
what I've been saying for a long time. This ending matches Dagashi Kashi's
almost exactly. So I figured the last chapter would be similar too. A
small jump in time and they are together again .
- « My
first manga. Yofukashi no Uta introduced me to this world, and since then,
I have come across many different works that have collectively rekindled
my love for reading.. manga or not. He will always hold a very, very
special place in my heart .
- " I
wanted him to become a vampire, but I'm happy either way, thank you
Kotoyama, this masterpiece will always be in my mind as it occupies a place
in my heart that no other manga can replace ."
