Sword Art Online fans are getting tired of waiting

“ Sword Art Online ” fans have begun to intensely debate the main franchise’s prolonged inactivity. Despite recent spin-off adaptations such as “Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online” in April 2018 and a second season scheduled for October 2024, as well as the “Sword Art Online Progressive” add-on , there have been no significant updates to the main series since the end of “Sword Art Online: Alicization” in September 2020 .

The franchise, which has left a deep mark on the anime industry for nearly twelve years, seems to have lost steam in its central narrative, sparking speculation and concerns among its fan base. Fans are wondering if interest from both audiences and production houses has waned.

“Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online” , released in 2018, brought a fresh perspective to the SAO universe, focusing on new characters and a different style of gameplay. Its initial success was considerable, leading to the confirmation of a second season coming in October 2024. “Sword Art Online Progressive” , on the other hand, has attempted to explore the first volumes of the original story from a more detailed perspective, providing fans with deeper insight into the original events.

Despite these efforts, the lack of new installments of the main plot has left a noticeable void. “Sword Art Online: Alicization” concluded its broadcast in 2020 with a complex and well-received arc, but since then, there have been no official announcements regarding the continuation of Kirito and Asuna’s main story.

The lack of new content has led many fans to speculate about the future of the franchise. Some believe that the main series' story has reached its natural conclusion and that spin-off adaptations and add-ons are the new focus. Others believe that the anime industry may be moving towards new trends and franchises, leaving Sword Art Online on the back burner.

Production houses may also be evaluating return on investment and sustained audience interest before committing to new seasons of the main series. Changing audience preferences and the evolution of the anime market may be influencing the decision to prioritize other projects over Sword Art Online.

  • « It used to be the best of the best, and now it has lost all that .»

  • They've been doing it for decades, I find it strange that they didn't get tired of it much earlier ."

  • « The story declines after the original arc, but picks up again in Alicization. It's a shame not everyone had the patience to get there .»

  • Asuna is the one stopping this from being a better franchise ."

  • It's an anime from more than ten years ago, it's obviously already outdated ."

  • « Honestly, I think Accel World is much more interesting .»

  • « The first season was okay, but from the second onwards they just kept forcing the story. I gave up after the first season to keep a nice memory .»

  • « I watched the two Progressive movies that came out, and they were boring as hell. Why did they think we were interested in seeing Asuna as a character? »

  • It's still one of the best light novels, and one of the most successful, I hope they resume production soon ."

  • « I really loved the Aincrad Arc .»

  • « Fans swear that Alicization is the best arc in Sword Art Online, but they don't tell you that to get there you have to go through several shitty seasons »
