The official website for the anime adaptation of the
manga written and illustrated by Mokumokuren , “ The Summer Hikaru Died ( Hikaru
ga Shinda Natsu )”, revealed the first promotional video for the
project. The video confirms the production details and lists that the
premiere is scheduled for the Summer-2025 period (July-September) in Japan.
For its part, Mokumokuren began
publishing the manga through Kadokawa 's Young
Ace UP service in August 2021. This is the author's first serialized
work and the only one he has published so far, a rather unusual case where the
author's first work gets an anime adaptation.
Synopsis of The Summer Hikaru Died
Best friends Yoshiki and Hikaru have been stuck
together like glue for almost their entire lives. They live in a small town and
are the only children their age, so they find solace in each other’s company.
Their friendship seems quaint at first glance, but Yoshiki has noticed a change
in Hikaru’s behavior since one fateful summer. The “Hikaru” who now sits next
to him looks nothing like his friend. Even though his physical appearance and
memories remain exactly the same, Yoshiki knows that something is wrong and
that the Hikaru he once knew has disappeared.
When he brings up the subject, Hikaru partially
transforms into an otherworldly being who threatens to kill Yoshiki if he
doesn't accept him, all the while professing his love for him. Wracked with
grief and unable to let go of his best friend, Yoshiki struggles to move on
with his life as he grows closer to the new Hikaru. At the same time, strange
occurrences begin to plague his village, wreaking havoc on the village.
