After almost a decade, BOFURI has ended

Through his Twitter account, the author Yuumikan announced that he has published the final chapter of the novel “ BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense ( Itai no wa Iya nanode Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. ) “, on the Shousetsuka ni Narou service, ending the work with 573 chapters. Although the original story is now complete, the printed version (the one published through Kadokawa publishing house and which undergoes review by an editor) continues to be published normally.

On Twitter, the author thanked fans for their support with the following message: “ Bofuri has come to its conclusion. Thank you so much for all your support! I believe that being able to reach a satisfactory end was possible thanks to all of you. This happy and fun journey, which could only exist thanks to a series of miracles, I hope was the same for you .”

For its part, Yuumikan began publishing the story through the independent service Shousetsuka ni Narou in May 2016 and ended it in February 2025, while the publisher Fujimi Shobo has published it in paper with illustrations by Koin since September 2017.

In addition to a manga adaptation by Jirou Oimoto , the work inspired an anime adaptation produced by SILVER LINK studios , which to date totals twenty-four episodes broadcast in two seasons in Winter-2020 (January-March) and Winter-2023 .

Following an enthusiastic invitation from her friend, Kaede Honjou reluctantly agrees to try out New World Online – a popular VRMMO played by thousands across Japan. She names her character Maple and sets off on her journey. As a complete newbie to such games, she allocates all of her stat points to Vitality, hoping not to get hurt. Without a single point in any other stat, Maple has an extraordinarily high Defense, but can’t move quickly or hit hard. However, this doesn’t end badly for her. Because of her high Defense, Maple gains very powerful skills such as Total Defense, Poison Immunity, and Devour.

These skills, along with the incredibly powerful items she obtains, allow her to annihilate most enemies in a single blow. Within days of starting to play, Maple takes third place in a server-wide event, earning herself a reputation as an unkillable and absurdly powerful player. Despite her character's power, Kaede has a lot to learn. As she progresses through the game, she meets new friends and acquaintances who help her complete new levels and events. Throughout all of her adventures, she may even acquire other crazy skills that exceed all expectations.
