A new
promotional video for the project was revealed on the official site for the
upcoming Pokémon original anime , “ Dragonite and the Mailman ( Kairyuu to
Yuubinya-san ).” The video features a snippet of the main theme song, titled
“ Kami Hikouki ,” performed by Suis (Yorushika) and Evan
Call , and lists the anime as scheduled to premiere on
February 27th via Pokémon’s official YouTube channel.
The
statement included a variety of comments from members of the production:
- Commentary by Taku Kimura
(Director)
- On his involvement in the
project: When my involvement was confirmed, I realized that I’m turning 30
this year ( late 2024 ), so I’m practically from the same
generation as Pokémon, which is celebrating its 29th anniversary. When I
heard that I’d be able to work on something so close to me since
childhood, I was excited and surprised, but at the same time, I couldn’t
quite believe it. Initially, the project was smaller in scale, but as we
developed it, it grew to become a key part of Pokémon Day. At first I felt
nervous and under pressure, but thanks to the team, who managed to capture
it in an incredible animation, the excitement ended up overcoming any
concerns.
- Aspects focused on: I wanted to clearly depict two
types of Pokémon this time around. First, those that work at the post
office and have a harmonious relationship with humans. And second, wild
Pokémon that live in their natural habitat, in packs and with full
vitality. Portraying a large number of Pokémon in animation was a
challenge, but we decided to tackle it without shying away from the
difficulty.
- Highlights: If I had to choose, I would say
all the scenes (laughs), but the Dragonite flight sequence is definitely a
must-see. Among them, there is a scene where Kyogre appears. From the
beginning, we were given the freedom to include legendary Pokémon, so I
proposed illustrations with Kyogre and others on the image boards.
Finally, scriptwriter Nana incorporated them into the script, so I put a
lot of effort into that part. Kyogre has the ability Drizzle, and thanks
to the work of CoMix Wave Films, the rain animation turned out
spectacular. It is a beautiful scene that is worth watching carefully.
- Message to fans: Since this is the 29th
anniversary, we did our best to include Pokémon from various series. The
story also has a special setting: it begins in the Paldea region and goes
back in time through the generations. Thanks to this, no matter which
installment you encountered Pokémon with, you will be able to enjoy the
story. There are also many Easter eggs, so I hope you will watch it
multiple times.
- Commentary by Kentarou Nana
(Screenwriter)
- On his involvement in the
project: I was born in 1990 and was about six years old when Pokémon Red and
Green came out. For me, Pokémon has always been like a childhood friend.
So when I got the chance to work on this project, it felt like a dream
come true: “Working with my childhood friend in my adult life is an
incredible honor!”
- Focus: I wanted this story to reflect
the richness and joy of a world inhabited by Pokémon, conveying the
feeling of “how beautiful it would be to live in a world with Pokémon.”
Also, at CoMix Wave Films we are known for our way of depicting landscapes
and environments, so I tried to play on that strength to highlight the
beauty of the Pokémon world in the narrative.
- Highlights: The Kyogre scene is one of the
most visually striking, thanks to Kimura's image boards. We decided to
include it at a very emotional moment in the story, and Kimura added some
spectacular direction. I hope the audience will enjoy it a lot. We were
also honored to have music by Evan Call, an internationally recognized
composer. In a meeting with Kimura, we mentioned that we were looking for
a cinematic sound, and the result was a perfect soundtrack. Also, Suis'
vocal performance is impressive, elevating the work 10 or 100 times more
with his music. I recommend paying special attention to the combination of
animation and soundtrack.
- Message to fans: As a Pokémon fan, I set out to create a work that reflects what I've always wanted to see in Pokémon. I hope fans enjoy it as much as I did. Even though it's a short film, the entire team made it with the intention of making it have the impact of a movie. There are scenes that are really better appreciated on the big screen, so if anyone wants to see it in theaters, feel free to send The Pokémon Company a message! (laughs)
Synopsis
of Dragonite and the Mailman
The
anime centers on Hana, a girl who admires a Dragonite who works as a postal
worker. One day, Hana receives a letter addressed to no one, and sets out to
find the sender with her trusty Firecracker, traveling around the city. She
discovers that the sender is a boy named Rio, who apparently intended to send
the letter to his father, who is working abroad in the Kanto region. But as the
father's birthday is fast approaching, it seems that he won't be able to
receive the letter in time.
