This
week, the official Diablo Immortal YouTube channel released a jaw-dropping
teaser trailer: a collaboration with none other than Berserk, the brutal and
beloved manga and anime franchise created by Kentarou Miura. The 30-second video shows a
Diablo Barbarian with the Mark of Sacrifice etched on his neck, fighting off
scores of monsters while wearing the Berserker armor and the famous Dragon
Slayer, just like Guts himself.
While the
idea of uniting these two dark worlds—the hellish universe of
"Diablo" and the brutal world of "Berserk"—seemed like a
dream come true, the initial excitement quickly turned to annoyance. Blizzard
confirmed that the collaboration would be with "Diablo IV" and
"Diablo Immortal," and that's where many fans raised their eyebrows.
The
problem? Both games are among the most criticized in the entire franchise. On the one hand, Diablo IV has
been harshly criticized for its lack of real content, questionable design
decisions, and an approach that many consider disappointing. On the other hand,
Diablo Immortal, since its release in 2022, has been tainted by its aggressive
microtransaction model, becoming synonymous with "pay-to-win" for
many players.
Despite
the criticism, the teaser made it clear that there will at least be visual
references faithful to the manga, and that keeps expectations high among some
players. No
specific details have been revealed yet, but Blizzard is expected to share more
information in the coming days. The Diablo franchise was born in 1996 and has
become a cornerstone of the ARPG genre, with millions of players worldwide. The
most recent expansion, Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred, arrived on October 7 for
consoles and PC.
A
collaboration with "Berserk" could have been legendary, but the
context in which it arrives leaves much to be desired. Now it remains to be seen
whether Blizzard can redeem itself and deliver content that truly lives up to
Kentarou Miura's work.
