Peko
Watanabe 's
1122 : For a Happy Marriage will explore new aspects of
marriage with the announcement of a spin-off titled 1122: Go-dai Fuufu
no Baai (The Case of Godai's Marriage). The news was revealed this
Wednesday through the series' official X account (formerly
Twitter).
This new
project will be published starting May 15 in Kodansha 's digital
magazine Morning Two and will focus on Godai ,
a close friend of the original protagonist Ichiko. The story promises to
address the conflicts, crises, and possible reconciliations in
their relationship.
An
honest look at modern marriage
The
original series, published between September 2016 and April 2020 ,
surprised everyone with its sincere and adult treatment of marriage. In
it, Ichiko and Otoya , a couple married for seven years,
decide to maintain an open relationship to cope with their lack of intimacy.
Otoya is having an extramarital affair with Mitsuki , of which
Ichiko is fully aware, which triggers profound changes in her perception of
love and commitment.
Kodansha
USA Publishing published
all seven volumes of the original manga in English, and the series was nominated
for the 12th Manga Taisho in January 2019. Now, with the new spin-off,
Peko Watanabe returns to her mature and realistic style to
explore another angle of marriage, promising new reflections on human
relationships.
What to
expect from the Godai case?
Unlike the
focus on Ichiko and Otoya, this new story will focus entirely on Godai
and his partner . The narrative is expected to retain the
introspective and emotionally complex tone that characterized the original
work, touching on themes such as communication within a couple, desire,
forgiveness, and routine .
Without a
doubt, 1122: Go-dai Fuufu no Baai is shaping up to be
essential reading for those looking for stories that depict contemporary
marriages in all their light and shadows.
