From the
confines of the collective imagination of thousands of fans and under the
direction of an artist who has conquered the visual industry, comes Shinsei
Galverse , an independent anime that promises to rekindle the flame of
Japanese science fiction of the 90s. Conceived as an “impossible” project
outside the traditional production system, this OVA will premiere in the summer
of 2025 through YouTube and other platforms, marking the directorial debut of
Ayaka Ohira, an emerging figure with a visual career linked to music, fashion
and digital art.
A galaxy
at war and a heroine without memory
In Shinsei
Galverse , we meet Zero, an enigmatic figure who awakens with no
memories after crash-landing on the planet Amatera, which is in the midst of a
devastating conflict. As the invading forces of Gevura ravage the planetary
system, Zero teams up with Ring, leader of the resistance, on a desperate quest
to understand his true identity. But what appears to be a tale of survival soon
transforms into a cosmic journey that intertwines past, present, and future.
With a
narrative inspired by classic sci-fi anime archetypes, the script—written
by Natsuko Takahashi (Bleach, Go! Princess Pretty Cure)
and Masahiro Okubo —weaves together action, mystery, and a
very contemporary emotional sensibility. This story stands as a tribute to
titles like Magic Knight Rayearth or Ghost in the
Shell , with which it shares not only an aesthetic, but also a spirit
of identity-questioning and universal resonance.
A
community-driven production
What
sets Shinsei Galverse apart isn't just its plot or technical
quality, but the way it was created. More than 4,000 fans participated in the
project's funding, providing not only funds but also ideas, enthusiasm, and a
direct connection to the creative team. During the production process, fans
were given unprecedented access to the work's development, allowing them to be
involved in character design, prop concepts, and even promotional ideas.
This
synergy between creators and audiences has been key to shaping what executive
producer Jack Baldwin describes as “an impossible anime.” In
his words: “This anime only exists thanks to the passion of our community. We
conceived of it as something the industry would never approve of, but we were
able to create it precisely because we shared the process with those who
dreamed it alongside us.”
The
talent behind the miracle
In addition
to the directorial debut of Ayaka Ohira — whose visual style
has shone in music videos for artists such as m-flo , YOASOBI and Tove
Lo —, Shinsei Galverse boasts an elite team:
- Co-directed by Yūta Takamura ( JoJo's Bizarre
Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable )
- Art Direction: Yang Liu of Ogura Atelier ( Ghost
in the Shell )
- Character Design: Satoshi Ishino ( Tokyo Mew Mew )
and Momo Nagayama
- Production: ARCH and animation by SoK
- Sound: Magic Capsule Co Ltd.
This
technical and artistic display gives the project a texture that combines the
retro with the contemporary, achieving a balance between homage and innovation
that can appeal to both nostalgic and new generations.
A new
benchmark for independent animation?
At a time
when independent anime is seeking new ways to break through blockbusters and
repetitive formulas, Shinsei Galverse emerges as a daring
offering that deeply connects with its audience. A work that not only aims to
tell a story, but also to demonstrate that collaboration and passion can open
up alternative paths within the industry.
With a 90s
aesthetic, cosmic spirit, and a community heart, the summer of 2025 could be
the stage where a new galaxy of Japanese animation icons is born.
