On Tuesday,
the official website of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise revealed
a new trailer and promotional image for its
upcoming film, titled Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie:
Walpurgisnacht: Rising. The film, which works as a direct sequel to Puella
Magi Madoka Magica The Movie Part 3: Rebellion, is now scheduled for
release in February 2026 in Japan.
A
premiere that has faced delays
Initially,
the feature film was scheduled for winter 2024, but it was postponed in
August of that year. It was then announced again for winter 2025, and has
finally been set for February 2026. As part of the return of the
franchise, it was also confirmed that the television versions of the
compilation films Beginnings and Eternal will
air in Japan from October 2025.
A luxury
team returns for this installment
Walpurgisnacht:
Rising will be
directed by Yukihiro Miyamoto, who has previously worked on Puella
Magi Madoka Magica and Magia Record. In addition, the
return of the original team is confirmed:
- Magica Quartet as original creators.
- Akiyuki Simbo as chief director.
- Gen Urobuchi (Nitroplus) as
screenwriter.
- Ume Aoki as Original Character
Designer.
- Junichirō
Taniguchi as animation designer
- Yuki Kajiura as a music composer
- Gekidan Inu Curry in the design of
alternative spaces.
- And the SHAFT studio
as responsible for the animation.

A
franchise with a growing history
The
original 12-episode series Puella Magi Madoka Magica premiered
in January 2011, and subsequently received three films: Beginnings and Eternal in
October 2012, and Rebellion in October 2013. Aniplex
of America distributed the installments in North America, and Crunchyroll has
also offered the series in streaming.
In addition
to the films, the universe was expanded with the anime Magia Record:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story, based on the mobile game of the same
name. This adaptation premiered in January 2020, had a second
season in July 2021 and a third and final one in April
2022.
The
original mobile game was released in Japan in August 2017 and
arrived in North America in June 2019. The English version closed
in September 2020 and the Japanese version ended its service
in July 2024. The new game in the franchise, Puella Magi
Madoka Magica: Exedra Magic, was released on March 27 and
will have a PC version via Steam starting this Thursday.
