Kinema Citrus, the studio behind Made in Abyss and The Rising of the Shield Hero, has a new original project on the way. Kadokawa unveiled the first main promotional video for the Goodbye, Lara (Sayonara Lara) anime today, further confirming that the series will debut in July 2026 and revealing two new cast members.

The trailer offers the first real look at the story and visual style of this original production, which is set on Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, the director's own hometown.

Goodbye, Lara anime details

The series will be directed by Takushi Koide, who was an assistant director on Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight. The series will be composed by Anna Kawahara, the character design is by Shiori Tani, known for her work on Star Wars: Visions, and the music is by Yuma Yamaguchi, composer of Link Click.

What is the story about?

The premise presents us with a story very similar to the classic tale of The Little Mermaid written by Hans Christian Andersen. The plot follows in the footsteps of a mermaid who decides to make a totally forbidden wish with the sole intention of being loved by a human.

After losing her life, the protagonist is reincarnated 200 years later in modern Japan. His new existence begins specifically at Lake Biwa, where he will have to learn to adapt to the complex customs of the human world. As a fun fact about the production, Lake Biwa is located in Shiga Prefecture, which happens to be exactly the hometown of director Takushi Koide.
