If you
thought your fever for building plastic robots was going to go away with age,
Bandai and Sunrise have other plans for your wallet. During the Gundam
Conference SPRING 2026 held on May 15, the directors dropped a couple
of bombs that are going to make you cry with nostalgia for the old school. For
starters, they officially confirmed that a new animation for Mobile
Suit Gundam Wing is already in production, a huge gift to the otaku
band that showed brutal support during their 30th anniversary celebrations last
year.
But it
doesn't stop there. As the franchise is preparing to go all out on its
monumental 50th anniversary in 2029, they also announced that
they have already started working on an ambitious remastering project for the
original Mobile Suit Gundam series itself (yes, the jewel of
1979). The idea of the committee is that new generations (and veterans who want
to relive the harshness of space war) can enjoy the work that gave birth to the
genre of tactical mechas with a visual quality adapted to our
times.
The
empire of plastic and letters continues to invoice
In case
anyone still had doubts about why they continue to bet so heavily on these
franchises, the conference numbers speak for themselves. The market for Gunpla (those
scale outfits that leave you without a fortnight) has already exceeded 800
million units shipped worldwide, while the collectible card game exceeded 630
million printed cards. And they don't just live off nostalgia; the digital
scene is also being broken with games such as SD Gundam G Generation
Eternal, which in just its first year of life has already accumulated more
than 8 million global downloads.
Synopsis
of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing
In the year
195 of the After Colony era, humanity has managed to establish space colonies,
but these live under the constant oppression and military yoke of the Earth
Sphere Alliance. Fed up with tyranny and political abuses, a group of rebels in
the colonies decided to secretly execute the so-called "Operation
Meteor". Five young and lethal pilots are sent to Earth, each in command
of an advanced and destructive mobile suit built from Gundanium alloy, known
simply as Gundams. Operating independently, these boys will start a violent
guerrilla war to dismantle the corrupt OZ military organization and liberate
the colonies once and for all.
