Everyone is
excited for the arrival of the new One Piece remake, but
behind the production some rather bitter news has just emerged. It turns out
that Mayumi Tanaka, the unmistakable voice actress who has given
life to Monkey D. Luffy for more than twenty-five years, tried
to take advantage of this new project to retire from the character.
Unfortunately for her, the studio slammed the door in her face, rejected her
request, and demanded that she continue in the role.
The
weight of an endless legacy
We have to
be empathetic with the situation. Tanaka is already in his seventies and has
been screaming at the top of his lungs in the recording studios for more than
two decades. According to recent reports, the actress considered that this
new animated project, which will retell the beginnings of the
pirate journey from scratch and is scheduled to premiere in early 2027, was the
perfect setting to hand over the throne to a new generation. Their intention
was for the studio to look for a fresh successor, but the production
committee adamantly refused to lose the most iconic voice in the
entire franchise.
The
moral debate in the community
Unsurprisingly,
this revelation sharply divided fan opinions. A large section of the audience
was quite concerned about the workload they are imposing on a
veteran actress. Starting a long-running series from the beginning requires
brutal energy, and many believe that forcing her to continue to take on the
leading role is a selfish decision on the part of the company, which
prioritizes nostalgia over the rest of her talent.
On the
other hand, there are the defenders of continuity. It's undeniable that Tanaka's
voice is so embedded in the character's DNA that any replacement would
have suffered relentless scrutiny from the public. The animation team
decided to play it safe to keep the essence of the future King of the
Pirates intact, making sure that the sonic familiarity is maintained
in this modern version.
Knowing the
immense physical demand required to play a shonen protagonist
of this caliber.
