It could have been any other voice. They chose
the same old one. Mayumi Tanaka, the seiyuu who has been Monkey
D. Luffy since 1999, confirmed her return to the character for THE
ONE PIECE, the remake of the story produced by WIT STUDIO that
will arrive on Netflix in February 2027. At 71,
the actress admitted to feeling some anxiety about starting something new, but
described the experience of filming as enjoyable once she found new ways to
approach the character.
The teaser opens with Gol D. Roger's last
words before revealing Luffy departing Foosha Village with the straw hat
left by Shanks the Redhead. The video features the first glimpses
of Roronoa Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji in
this new adaptation, closing with Luffy throwing his Gum Gum Pistol at
the Lord of the Coast. Director Masashi Koizuka noted that the
animation team is working at full capacity to live up to the voice acting, and
that the goal is for viewers to be able to experience the original fascination
of Oda's manga from the beginning once again.
THE ONE PIECE is not a continuation or a
spin-off: it is a completely new adaptation that starts from the beginning of
the original manga, starting with the East Blue arc. The production
is separate from the television series that has been on the air for more than
25 years, and the stated goal is to offer an updated visual experience for the
current moment without losing the spirit of adventure that defined the story
from the beginning.
The first season will cover approximately the
first 50 chapters of the manga, following Luffy until his encounter with Sanji
at the Baratie floating restaurant. The season will consist of seven
episodes with a total time of approximately 300 minutes, and all
episodes will be available simultaneously from day one on Netflix.
