intelligence has once again lit the fuse in the manga industry and this time
the anger of readers is total. The romantic comedy play Senpai, Kyorigan
Baguttemasu! managed to sneak into fourth place in the rookie contest of a
well-known Japanese publisher. However, far from receiving congratulations, the
project ended up unleashing a strong funa from the community, which did not
forgive the use of generative tools to replace the work of an illustrator.
The
discomfort of the readers exploded when they opened the first chapters and
noticed details that immediately reveal the origin of the drawing. Those who
reviewed the pages pointed out that the female protagonist shows exactly the
same face in each frame, with panels distorted to fit together and dialogues
that seem to be taken from an automatic translator without revision. As if that
were not enough, the author made the mistake of laying out the reading from
left to right in a traditional Japanese format that is read backwards,
revealing the lack of care in the production.
Several
artists and followers considered it disrespectful for a proposal of this type
to compete against people who dedicate years to perfecting their drawing
technique. In the comments section of the first chapter, the wave of complaints
grew so much that the author, known as Mushimatsu, announced that he will hide
all negative messages as soon as the voting closes. The creator even asked his
few supporters to avoid commenting so as not to fuel the discussion further.
This
situation reopened the debate on the legal loopholes that exist in
self-publishing platforms. Although the site allows anyone to upload stories
generated with artificial intelligence, the publisher that owns the contest
already left a precedent last February when it disqualified another work for
the same reason, clarifying that no work done with artificial intelligence can
win a place of official publication in its digital magazine. With the final
results scheduled for December 21, it is clear that being in the top positions
will not guarantee him a professional contract.
