If you
thought that poor Subaru had already paid all his debts with suffering in this
isekai, get ready because he has a very long journey ahead of him. During the
activities for the tenth anniversary of the franchise, executive producer Sho
Tanaka made it clear that the animated adaptation of Re:Zero is
far from reaching its end and that they are practically starting a new decade
of content.
The story
behind this success was not always an easy one. Tanaka recalled how in 2016,
when they were preparing the first season, several executives did
not have confidence in the project and the budget was so tight that they almost
left us with a short adaptation of just thirteen episodes. Luckily, the
production team fought to get the full twenty-five episodes approved, allowing
the first arcs of Tappei Nagatsuki's light novels to be
adapted as they should be.
That risk
was worth every penny and laid the foundations for a massive phenomenon. After
a second season aired between 2020 and 2021, and a third
season split between late 2024 and early 2025, the franchise is
currently in the middle of airing its fourth season, released in
April 2026. With more than sixteen million copies in circulation worldwide, the
work proved that the community is still hungry for surprises, allowing Tanaka
to plan the next ten years of adaptations slowly but surely.
Written by Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrated by Shinichiro Otsuka, the saga began as a light novel that revolutionized the genre by introducing Subaru Natsuki, an ordinary young man who ends up in a parallel world with an ability as powerful as it is heartbreaking: going back in time every time he dies. With its combination of mystery, moments of high psychological tension and unforgettable characters, the story became an undisputed benchmark of Japanese entertainment.
