An animator explained the techniques to give 3DCG an 'anime look'

In recent weeks, Sango , a rigger on the independent 3DCG animated film “ Bite The Bullet ”, has shared on his Twitter account a few “ behind the scenes ” showing some of the fascinating ( albeit somewhat disturbing ) techniques used to give CG animation that "anime" look.

For example, the following post reveals how the character's CG model face is deformed to recreate an “ anime mouth ” for a profile shot of a character speaking. Sango commented on this: " Another profile cut. The mouth is deformed to look like an “anime mouth” even in the dialogue cut ».

An example of how the upper half of the model's face is warped to better disguise her 3DCG look for a particular shot was also shown in a previous post. Sango wrote: " When the face is at an angle to the camera, such as when looking down, there was a slight 3D effect near the eyeballs, so we scaled the top half of the face to avoid the 3D effect that makes the face looks like a “3DCG anime” ».

The tidbits of interest made quite an impression on fans, highlighting comments like, " Damn! I hate it! I don't want this knowledge! »; I knew something about the anime style bothered me somehow, now I understand " and " I already hated that they draw their mouths on their cheeks in anime, but this is going too far!" ». Finally, the animation in question " Bite the Bullet " was released on February 11 on YouTube.
