The anime adaptation of “Jujutsu Kaisen”
continues with the second season, scheduled to end next week. However, the
penultimate episode decided to adapt one of the most controversial scenes from
the original manga that many had even decided to “erase from their memories.” In
fact, Some even expected the production team at MAPPA not to animate this
scene, and were even sympathetic if the studio made this decision, but it was a
surprise when the moment finally arrived.
Near the end of the events of the “Shibuya Incident Arc”, Mei Mei and her younger brother, Ui Ui, escaped from Japan. They both decided to stay in a hotel in Malaysia, a contrast to the situation of Kento Nanami. As the scene unfolds, we witness how Mei Mei is having an incestuous relationship with her brother, and the animation team left no panel unadapted.
As the reader can already imagine, this scene was
controversial from the original manga, and showing it in the anime adaptation
only revived the debate, with many people criticizing the character of Mei Mei
and the author Gege himself Akutami. Many claim that this scene was
unnecessary to show that Mei Mei was already corrupted to the core since she
left Shibuya to her fate.
The scene alone is problematic on many levels, from Mei
Mei and Ui Ui being siblings and the fact that an older woman is manipulating a
minor at her whim. This had already been shown in the story arc
itself, with Mei Mei risking her brother's life to gain the advantage, showing
how little she really cares.
Jujutsu Kaisen fans claim that Gege Akutami included this
scene to show how morally corrupt Mei Mei was, and to show the decline of
society within Jujutsu Kaisen. It makes sense and works from this
perspective, but some claim that the simple fact that Mei Mei fled the
battlefield was enough to prove that “she was not well.”
Those who claim that the scene is unnecessary are not
referring to this precisely, but to the fact that it has no real use within the
story. Later, Mei Mei rejoins the group as if nothing had happened,
and she never takes the time to justify her actions. This is precisely where
most of the comments that arose go:
- «She
definitely stole the attention on social networks».
- «People
saying that “it's okay for Mei Mei to do these things” is the precise
reason why Gege made her an attractive woman. Thus people do not take the
situation seriously and do not even see Ui Ui as a victim, but as “a
champion”».
- «Oh
no, why didn't Mei Mei die in Shibuya and Nanami survive to go to
Malaysia?».
- «I just realized that Mei Mei could be the only survivor at the end of Jujutsu Kaisen, shit».
- «Mei
Mei, Makima, Himeno and Misato. The four horsemen of grooming».
- «God,
please take all of Choso's pain and transfer it to Mei Mei».
- «Mei
Mei often exploits Ui Ui and rewards him with whatever the scene wants to
show, but her true love is money and it is reflected in how little she
gives him. his brother matters».
- «Nanami
must be wallowing in hell watching Mei Mei review her finances in a hotel
while he was fighting Mahito».
- «Gosh,
Mei Mei's scene is ten times worse than in the manga, I can't believe it».
- «The Jujutsu Kaisen drama with Mei Mei is not only the funniest thing to see people criticizing the situation, but also the most hypocritical thing ever».
