in Japan they are already immersed in the celebration of Pigtail Day .
This annual holiday has gained popularity among otakus and pop culture lovers,
who gather to pay homage to the distinctive hairstyle.
Pigtails have become an iconic symbol in otaku culture
thanks to their frequent appearance in anime, manga, and video games. The
“Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon” franchise, in particular, is often credited for
popularizing this style thanks to the main character, Usagi Tsukino, sporting
it in the 1990s.
The formalization of the celebration of Pigtail Day began
in December 2011 , when Japanese fashion designer and photographer Kan
Furuya, president of Laugh Valley, founded the Japan TwinTail
Association. The following month, on February 2, 2012, Pigtail Day was
officially registered with the Japan Anniversary Association.
Since 2013, Twitter users have actively participated in
the holiday by sharing selfies and cosplay photos in pigtails with the hashtag
#ツインテールの日. Social platforms are flooded with
the creativity of the otaku community, creating a vibrant online celebration.
What began as an expression of love for hair styling has
become a cultural phenomenon that transcends virtual borders. Professional
models and artists are not far behind, participating in the event by sharing
Pigtail Day themed photos on Twitter and Instagram.
