This article contains
spoilers for “Sakamoto Days.” Reader discretion is advised
It seems
that Masaki Watanabe , director of the anime adaptation of
“ Sakamoto Days ,” got into serious trouble
with fans. It all started when he decided to retweet an art from the
original manga, but here comes the problem: the drawing showed a fight that has
not yet appeared in the anime. To top it off, the art was colored and
in a style reminiscent of MAPPA projects, which made more than one person think
he was bragging.
Obviously,
the networks were quick to explode, with comments like: “ It’s sad
that the anime director shares images with spoilers for parts that haven’t been
animated yet .” This made it clear that fans weren’t amused at
all. Many were upset that the spoiler ruins the experience for those who only
follow the anime, and they think Watanabe should have thought better of posting
something like that.
And if the
anger of the fans wasn’t enough, Tetsu Ookawa, manga assistant and
author of the spin-off “Sakamoto Holidays,” also came out to criticize the
situation on Twitter . In a rather direct message, he wrote:
- « Exactly! There are
fans who only watch anime, and this shows a complete lack of
consideration. I would like you to consider your position. This is not
about 'looking cool'. This medium only exists because there are people who
watch it, and without that consideration it doesn't work. I wonder how you
can do this as a creator .»
The author
even went further, saying that the team behind the anime is “outdated”
and that they have no idea how to connect with today’s audience:
- « I've looked into the core staff at Sakamoto Days and it seems like they're all like living fossils, unable to update their sensibilities. They're probably the kind of people who are only tuned into what they like, and nothing else. I've already gone from anger and sadness to wonder .»
In the
face of criticism, the director immediately deleted his post, but it was too
late. Fans and even the manga team itself are disappointed, and many now doubt
whether the director really understands what “respecting the audience” means. Meanwhile, the anime
adaptation remains high in the popularity charts thanks to a great animation
production by TMS Entertainment. However, it is not known what consequences
this stumble could bring for the fan community.
