A press
release from Kodansha announced that the live-action
film adaptation of Shizumu Watanabe and Okusho's manga "Real Account"
has been canceled due to "various circumstances." The
publisher apologized for not providing updates on this project for a long time,
especially to those who were hoping to see the film in theaters.
However,
author Shizumu Watanabe surprised everyone with the following comment:
" Unfortunately, the film adaptation of Real Account, announced in
2018, has been canceled. We apologize to everyone who has been waiting for so
many years. As a small compensation, we will make an announcement
tomorrow at 6:00 PM regarding another project. We hope you
stay tuned for details! "
While the
live-action film was originally announced in January 2018, Shizumu
Watanabe began serializing the manga in Kodansha 's Bessatsu
Shonen Magazine in February 2014, with art by Okusho .
The manga moved to Weekly Shonen Magazine in January 2015, and
returned to Bessatsu Shonen Magazine in June 2018, where it
continued until its conclusion in November 2019.
Real
Account Synopsis
Real
Account is a popular social media app that allows its users to connect their
accounts to reality. From socializing to purchasing things in real life, the
app has become indispensable in daily life, especially for high school
sophomore Ataru Kashigawa. He uses Real Account as a means of escaping reality
and feels a sense of belonging and connection with his followers, whom he
considers his friends. However, Ataru's views on friendship change drastically
when he is immersed in Real Account's virtual world and forced to participate
in gruesome death games alongside ten thousand other users.
But
these are no ordinary online death games, as dying in the Real Account world
means you and all your followers die in reality. To make matters worse, having
no followers also means certain death. When Aratu begins participating in these
death games, he discovers the existence of Yuuma Mukai, a teenager who bears a
striking resemblance to him. This discovery turns things upside down. Betrayed
by his so-called friends one by one, Ataru is left with an anonymous follower.
In this virtual world where a single follower can be the difference between
life and death, Ataru must survive and complete these games in order to return
to the real world.
