Re:Zero fails with another smartphone game

Bad news for "Re:Zero" fans: the smartphone game "Re:Zero Witch's Re:surrection" will be shutting down on May 30, 2025, at 2:00 PM (JST). Furthermore, with the announcement, sales of Magic Rainbow Crystals, the game's premium currency, have been discontinued.

This RPG based on the popular franchise will only last nine months , as it was released on August 26, 2024. Singer Konomi Suzuki, who has performed several of the anime's openings, was in charge of voicing the game's main theme, Resurrection.

If this sounds like déjà vu, it's because this isn't the first time a "Re:Zero" game has disappeared on short notice. "Re:Zero Lost in Memories" also shut down its servers at the time, and the browser game "Re:Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu: Kinsho to Nazo no Seirei" also failed to sustain itself. It seems that while the franchise remains a hit in anime and light novels, the games themselves are failing to take off.

As expected, the news generated a lot of comments among Japanese fans:

  • I knew this was going to happen ."

  • Between Lost in Memories and this one, the Re:Zero games seem cursed ."

  • « Nine months… well, at least it lasted a little while ».

  • It was clear that it was a game made just for commemoration ."

  • It was difficult to play without dedicating a lot of time to it. I hope the next one is more accessible… and doesn't make my phone melt ."

  • I had fun, so I'm not complaining ."

  • « First Lost in Memories , now this… the Re:Zero games are shorter than Subaru's lifespan in the series. I loved the original stories, so I'm sad. Thanks to the development team! »

  • They're closing it so soon...? "

  • I saw it coming. Why does the franchise only know how to do anime and Ichiban Kuji raffles well ?"

  • I thought it wouldn't last long, but this is ridiculous... not even the new season of the anime managed to attract people ."

  • It lasted as long as a blink of an eye ."

  • I always said I would try it someday… and in the end I never did ."

Despite its seemingly unsuccessful games, "Re:Zero" remains a hit in anime and light novels. The question is: will they try to release another game in the future, or should they just give up altogether?
