Tokyo Revengers author flops with new manga

"Astro Royale," the manga created by Ken Wakui, author of Tokyo Revengers, will come to an end in the next issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, with chapter 50, which will be published on April 21 (although it will obviously be leaked before). The series, which began in April 2024, failed to maintain the public's interest for long, and despite the fame of its author, it has not been able to replicate the resounding success of his previous work.

This manga followed the story of Hibaru Yotsurugi, the biological son of the leader of a yakuza clan. Despite being nominated as the group's next leader, he decides to decline the position and instead appoints his friend, Terasu Yotsurugi. However, an unexpected event, such as the meteor shower that grants many characters, including Hibaru, a mysterious power called "Astro," sparks a war within the clan.

Although initially promising, the series failed to capture readers' attention or enthusiasm, as evidenced by community comments. From the artwork, which some considered "ugly" or "strange," to criticisms of the story, it seems the manga failed to connect as expected.

  • Ugh, I don't want to buy something with such an ugly cover ."

  • That cover looks like a Photoshop image ."

  • The cover gives off all the air that it's going to be cancelled ."

  • I think the publisher is going to drop it soon ."

  • If this manga ends up as a compilation episode, I'm going to laugh ."

  • It's already decided, it's going to be cancelled soon ."

The series, which failed to garner even half the affection of "Tokyo Revengers," is saying goodbye with a general sense of disappointment. Fans who had hoped for something on the level of his previous work are now left with the feeling that Wakui hasn't been able to replicate the magic in this new offering. In short, "Astro Royale" becomes yet another failed attempt in Ken Wakui's career to create a successful new franchise, one that failed to win over the public even in its short run.

The magazine, despite the author's efforts, doesn't seem to have much faith in the series' future, and social media comments clearly suggest this is a cancellation. What do you think? Did it catch your attention, or do you think the cancellation was predictable?
