This
Thursday, the official X/Twitter account of Square
Enix's G Fantasy magazine announced that the manga Toilet-Bound
Hanako-kun (Jibaku Shōnen Hanako-kun), created by Iro
Aida, will go on hiatus due to a sudden illness of the
author.
For this
reason, a new chapter will not be published in the next edition of the
magazine, corresponding to the August issue, which will go on
sale on July 18 (local time in Japan, 11:00 a.m. on
July 18 in Spain). Instead, the reprint of an earlier chapter will be
included.
The work
will resume its publication in the September edition, which
will be available on August 18.
A manga
full of mystery and international success
Yen
Press, the
publisher that publishes the manga in English, describes the story like this:
"Hanako-san,
Hanako-san... are you there?"
Rumors
abound in Kamome Academy about the school's Seven Mysteries, and one of them is
Hanako-san. It is said that she inhabits the third cubicle of the girls'
bathroom on the third floor in the old building, and that she can grant any
wish to whoever summons her. Nene Yashiro, a high school student obsessed with
the occult and romantic dreams, enters that haunted bathroom... but the
Hanako-san he finds there is nothing like he expected: he's a boy!
The manga
was released in 2014 in G Fantasy magazine, and has since
become a popular work in Japan and abroad. Volume 24 was
published on June 26, and volume 25 will arrive
on October 27. In English, Yen Press published volume
21 on January 21.
A
franchise with multiple adaptations
The manga's
first anime adaptation premiered in January 2020 in Japan,
with a total of 12 episodes. Funimation took care
of its broadcast with English subtitles and dubbing.
The anime's
second season began on January 12, 2025, and is currently
airing. The second part of this season premiered on July 6, and can
be seen through Crunchyroll, which also offers the English dub.
A
spin-off with its own anime
Aida also
released a spin-off titled After-School Hanako-kun (Hōkago
Shōnen Hanako-kun) on pixiv Comic in February 2018,
which ended in October 2021 with a total of 25 chapters. Square
Enix published a single compilation volume in August 2019,
which Yen Press published in English in April 2021.
This
spin-off also received an anime adaptation that premiered in October
2023, and was distributed internationally by Crunchyroll.
For now,
fans will have to wait a month for the return of Toilet-Bound
Hanako-kun, in the hope that its author will make a full recovery.
