A dream come true for fans of fantasy shoujo. The second 2026 issue of Hakusensha's Hana to Yume magazine announced Friday that a sequel to the anime for the manga adaptation Yona of the Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona) is officially in production.
The announcement comes at a bittersweet but exciting time, as the same magazine published the final chapter of Mizuho Kusanagi's masterpiece on Friday. However, the farewell is not final yet: it was confirmed that an extra chapter and a supplementary fan book will be published in the sixth edition of the magazine, scheduled to go on sale on February 20.
The long wait
The first anime adaptation premiered in 2014 and featured 24 episodes, gaining a loyal fan base that has been calling for a sequel for more than a decade. The franchise also inspired three OVAs between 2015 and 2016 and several stage plays, most recently a musical in July 2024.
About the work
Kusanagi launched the manga in 2009. The story follows Yona, a red-haired princess who loses her kingdom and family after a betrayal on the day of her 16th birthday. Forced to flee with her bodyguard Hak, she must strengthen herself to survive and recover what was taken from her.
Volume 47 of the manga will ship on February 20, 2026.
