The physical format in the manga
industry has just received a historic shake-up that marks the end of
an era of absolute dominance in the printing presses. According to the latest
quarterly reports published by the Japan Association of Magazine Publishers,
the legendary Weekly Shonen Jump recorded an average
circulation of just 985,000 copies per volume between April and June 2026. This
is the first time, since the current metric system was implemented almost two
decades ago, that the legendary magazine of the Shueisha publishing
house falls below the barrier of one million copies printed.
To put the brutality of this change in
consumption into perspective, just take a look at the golden age of publishing.
By the end of 1994, driven by unrepeatable titans who defined the genre, the
magazine achieved an all-time record of 6.53 million copies in circulation with
a single year-end double issue. However, the massive migration of readers to
digital platforms has taken its toll. The fall of Shonen Jump is
not an isolated case, since the direct competition is much lower: Weekly
Shonen Magazine barely averaged 281,000 copies and Weekly
Shonen Sunday sank to 120,000, leaving Japan without
a single weekly manga magazine that manages to exceed one million physical
impressions today.
Despite these numbers, which strictly measure
the magazine's print run and not the global reach of its works, the platform
remains the undisputed cradle of the most successful franchises on
the planet. The community continues to fervently consume their
stories week after week, keeping mainstays like One Piece and Hunter
x Hunter at the top. To these giants are added the modern gems that
currently carry the weight of the magazine, such as the relentless action
of Sakamoto Days and Kagurabachi, the captivating
world of rakugo in Akane-banashi, or the more recent bets such as
the fantasy of Ichi the Witch and the nightly comedy of Someone
Hertz.
Taking into account that today it is infinitely easier, faster and more ecological to read the chapters directly from the screen of a cell phone through official applications
