There's
something almost ironic about a story about perfect masks being forced to bring
down the curtain for such a human reason. Coco Uzuki's Fall in Love,
You False Angels (Koiseyo Mayakashi Tenshi-domo) manga will go
on hiatus, the October issue of Kodansha's Dessert magazine announced on August
25, 2026. The break responds to the author's health concerns and the need to
reorganize her workload. The series is scheduled to pick up again in the
January 2027 cover issue, which will go on sale in November, just as the MAPPA animated
adaptation is already warming up for its premiere that same year.
With seven
volumes published in Japan, the seventh arriving on June 12, 2026, and an
English license in charge of Kodansha USA since the beginning of 2025, the work
reaches this brake with a resume that cannot be improvised: it won the shojo
category of the 49th Kodansha Manga Awards in 2025, was nominated for the 71st
Shogakukan Awards the same year and made it into the top 20 several times the
Kono Manga ga Sugoi list! for readers. All that while anticipation for the
anime continues to grow.
The plot
follows Otogi Katsura, the first-year class president who everyone calls the
angel of the heart. In front of the classroom she is sweet, serene and
perfectly composed; in private she is direct, brusque and does not hesitate to
nip in the bud any rude advance. His counterpart is Toki Ninomae, the vice
president whose impeccable courtesy hides an equally sharp edge. When Otogi
dispatches a group of guys trying to flirt with her at the train station, Toki
witnesses the moment and is drawn to precisely that unfiltered version. He
returns her honesty and they both recognize each other as accomplices. They
decide to protect the secret of their true personalities from the rest of the
school, and that pact brings them closer and closer.
Uzuki
premiered the series in Dessert in April 2023 and has since built a light
romantic comedy that is sustained by the tension of hidden identities. The
day-to-day life of the school, train rides, council meetings, hallways and
classrooms, becomes the stage where two seemingly blameless leaders discover
that shared vulnerability can be more dangerous and attractive than any perfect
performance. That contrast between the angelic façade and the real character is
the driving force that has taken the work from the pages of a shojo magazine to
a MAPPA production.

MAPPA and the weight of keeping pace
The
announcement of the hiatus comes months after MAPPA confirmed, in June 2026,
that it will produce the TV series scheduled for release in 2027. During the
livestream of its fifteenth anniversary, the studio showed a visual teaser and
a trailer. The direction was in the hands of Yasutomo Okamoto, the series
composition by Yohei Yamazaki and the character design by Mariko Oka, known for
her work on The Rose of Versailles. Yuriko Waki is listed as an animation
producer, with Takumi Hashimoto as art direction, Kana Tanabe as color design,
Shunsuke Taniguchi as photography and Ayumu Takahashi as editor.
Knowing
that the MAPPA anime is already dated in 2027 and that the author prioritizes
her health before returning to the pages of Dessert.
