The first season titled Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club premiered in Japan in July 2013 and had twelve episodes. Later, a second season titled Free! - Eternal Summer premiered in July 2014 and had thirteen episodes. Finally, the third season titled Free! - Dive to the Future premiered in Japan in July 2018 and ran for twelve episodes.
Previously, the premiere of this film was scheduled to take place within the framework of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, however, both the postponement of this event and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the attack on the first building of the studios delayed production.
