In the year 2022, virtual reality has advanced by leaps and bounds, and a massive online role-playing game called Sword Art Online (SAO) is released. With the help of "NerveGear" technology, players can control their in-game avatars using only their own thoughts. Kazuto Kirigaya, nicknamed “Kirito”, is one of the lucky few enthusiasts to get their first batch of the game. He goes online and finds himself, along with ten thousand other people, in the picturesque and elaborate world of Aincrad, filled with fantastic medieval weapons and horrifying monsters.
However, in a cruel turn of events, the players soon find that they cannot log out; The creator of the game has trapped them in the new world of his until they complete the hundred levels of the game. In order to escape from Aincrad, Kirito will have to interact and cooperate with his companions. Some are allies, while others are enemies, such as Asuna Yuuki, who commands the leading group trying to escape from the ruthless game.
