Celebrating that the manga written and illustrated by Sui Ishida , Choujin X , will begin to be published in Germany , Manga Passion media interviewed the author about the creation of this work and his success with Tokyo Ghoul . Although a variety of things were commented on it, the most important thing was the author's perception of the work starring Ken Kaneki.
Let's review the excerpt from this interview:
- He achieved great success with Tokyo Ghoul. We heard that she then felt a lot of pressure to succeed. How did you overcome this pressure while working on Choujin X? How did you deal with the great expectations of the fans?
- I don't remember saying there was pressure to succeed. But I'm not sure I remember it well. I said? Don't know. I don't think I said it. But the writers and the pressure, I think it's a deep subject. So in my own way, I thought about it once. As a premise, I really don't think Tokyo Ghoul was a success.
- Success for me is when I feel like I've drawn something well. Now that I think about it, I don't really require it to do well in the market or for a lot of people to think it's good. So for me success is if I can praise myself for it.
- And if I think about it a bit more, I think I find it quite difficult to relate to my readers. I honestly don't have a clear idea of what kind of people like to read my manga. I think if I think about it too much, I try to adapt more and more just to the readers, and that affects my drawings and makes them look weird. For this reason, for now I only ask for "self-praise" for myself. Everything else I like and I think “thank you”.
- So the only thing I can do is face my own obstacles, and I think that's the biggest pressure I'm under. I haven't gotten over that pressure yet. So when I draw manga, whether it's Tokyo Ghoul or Choujin X, I face the same obstacles and the same pressures. If people like what I have drawn after overcoming my obstacles, I am happy. I think that's when I first connect with readers.
“Success for me is when I feel like I've drawn something well,” Ishida stated, challenging the conventional notion of success based on commercial recognition or the opinion of others. For the author, the achievement lies in his own satisfaction and self-praise. It seems that Ishida has developed a unique take on the impact and quality of his work, moving away from the need to please the masses or achieve mainstream popularity.
Surprisingly, Ishida confessed to having a hard time relating to his readers and understanding what kind of people enjoy his manga. This lack of clarity has led the author to remain faithful to his own style, avoiding adapting exclusively to the preferences of the readers. He recognized that excessive focus on pleasing others could negatively affect his artistic style, which explains the uniqueness and originality of his drawings.
Despite his critical outlook on his success, Ishida shared his joy when readers find a connection to his work. “ If people like what I have drawn after overcoming my obstacles, I feel happy. I think that's when I first connect with readers ," she revealed.
Ultimately, the author faces the pressure of overcoming his own obstacles in every new work he creates, be it Tokyo Ghoul or his latest manga, Choujin X. His focus on his personal achievement and her desire to exceed his own expectations have become the biggest source of pressure for him.
Sui Ishida continues to defy convention and make his mark in the manga industry. His sincerity and dedication to his own art make him a truly unique author. While he may not consider Tokyo Ghoul a success in the traditional sense, his ability to connect with readers remains undeniable.
