Leading Artificial
Intelligence (AI) companies including OpenAI , Microsoft , Google and Meta ,
among others, reported that they have jointly committed to preventing
their AI tools from being used for the exploitation of minors and to produce
material of child sexual abuse . The initiative has been led by the
child safety group Thorn and the organization All Tech Is Human, dedicated to
the responsible use of technology.
The goal of the initiative is to prevent the
creation of sexually explicit material involving minors and remove it from
social media platforms and search engines. More than 104
million files of suspected child sexual abuse material were reported in the
United States alone in 2023, Thorn says. In the absence of collective
action, generative AI is set to worsen this problem and overwhelm law
enforcement agencies that are already struggling to identify genuine victims.
Thorn and All Tech Is Human published a new document titled
“ Safety by Design for Generative AI: Preventing Child Sexual Abuse ”
that outlines strategies and lays out recommendations for companies creating AI
tools, search engines, social media platforms, enterprises. Hosting providers
and developers take steps to prevent generative AI from being used to harm
minors.
One of the recommendations, for example, asks
companies to carefully choose the data sets used to train AI models and to
avoid those that only contain cases of child sexual abuse material, but also
adult sexual content , due to to the propensity of generative AI to
combine both concepts. Thorn is also calling on social media platforms and
search engines to remove links to websites and apps that allow viewing
of “naked” images of minors, thereby creating new AI-generated child sexual
abuse material online .
Of course, this news trended on comment forums in Japan, as
loli illustrations are extremely popular within AI-generated content (including
hentai illustrations as well), attracting a variety of comments such as:
- « Even
if it is not generated by an AI, they should prohibit this type of
illustration from the beginning .»
- " I
don't care as long as the shota are protected ."
- « And
where are the flesh and blood victims? I don't understand ".
- « And
when are we going to regulate the fat people who appear in hentai? ».
- « What
is the point of expanding the limits of AI if they are going to start
regulating it? ».
- « Well,
we are talking about the United States. There it is illegal to even make
anime illustrations of any kind .
- « I
really don't understand, before you start regulating the 2D world,
shouldn't you worry about real children first? ».
- « And
what about freedom of expression? I can almost hear the footsteps of the
military boots .
- « And
how do you decide between which are erotic loli illustrations and which
are normal loli illustrations? ».
- « Normal
loli images should also be banned .»
- " Apparently
there are some traumatized individuals who believe that these types of
illustrations cause real victims when there really aren't any ."
