Scarlet, the new film by Mamoru Hosoda, reveals its cast

The official website of Scarlet, the new film directed by Mamoru Hosoda (Summer WarsBelle), announced the addition of eleven new voice actors to its cast, thus reinforcing the anticipated dark fantasy production. As previously reported, Mana Ashida plays Scarlet, the protagonist, while Masaki Okada will play Hijiri, a man from modern Japan who accompanies her on her journey of revenge.


A stellar cast for a world beyond death


Among those newly confirmed is acclaimed actor Koji Yakusho, who has already worked with Hosoda in previous films such as The Boy and the BeastMirai and Belle. This time, he will give voice to Claudius, a ruthless king who murdered his brother Amlet to take the throne.



The cast is completed with the following characters and actors:


  • Amlet – Masachika Ichimura: Scarlet's father, a kindly king betrayed by Claudius.
  • Voltimand – Kotaro Yoshida: Claudius' ally who seeks Scarlet's life in the "Land of the Dead".
  • Gertrude – Yuki Saito: Scarlet's mother, Claudius' accomplice.
  • Cornelius – Yutaka Matsushige: Claudius' strong arm, also behind Scarlet.
  • Polonius – Kazuhiro Yamaji: Keep an eye on Scarlet alongside Raretees.
  • Raretees – Tokyo Emoto: Keep an eye on Scarlet alongside Polonius.
  • Rosenkranz – Munetaka Aoki: Claudius' servant, hunts Scarlet alongside Guildenstern.
  • Guildenstern – Shota Sometani: Rosenkranz's partner in the hunt against Scarlet.
  • Girl – Noa Shiroyama: A mysterious girl that Scarlet meets in the Land of the Dead.
  • Old Woman – Kayoko Shiraishi: enigmatic woman who appears in the same world.

Koji Yakusho shared his experience recording alone with Hosoda in the studio: "It was like rehearsing a play. I haven't seen the other characters in motion or heard their voices yet. I'm looking forward to seeing the final result."


A story of revenge between life and death


Scarlet is written and directed by Mamoru Hosoda, with production by the renowned Studio Chizu. It is scheduled to be released in Japanese theaters on November 21 at 00:00 (UTC+2), while it will arrive in U.S. theaters on December 12.


The story follows Scarlet, a princess who fails in her attempt to avenge her father's death. Upon awakening in the "Land of the Dead", he must face a world overwhelmed by madness. If he fails to complete his revenge and reach the "Infinite Place", his existence will be erased forever.


A journey between life and death. A journey with no return. Will Scarlet find a new purpose at the end of the road?
