Fans disappointed with the ending of Boku no Hero Academia

This article includes spoilers for the manga “Boku no Hero Academia.” Reader discretion is advised.

As happened with “Jujutsu Kaisen”, the next chapter of “ Boku no Hero Academia ” has also been leaked and immediately became a trend, since it is the last one. The most recent chapter had left many outstanding questions, will Deku and Uraraka finally become a couple? Will Deku lose One For All completely and stop being a hero? Now it's time to review what Kohei Horikoshi prepared for this latest installment.

Thanks to the leaks, we finally had access to the full chapter, and although this definitely ruins the surprise that was supposed to be revealed next weekend , it is what remains with the fact that the manga is published in print instead of online. digital form to avoid leaks, as happens with “Chainsaw Man” and other mangas that are published directly on digital platforms.

Of course, we must anticipate that the reception of this final chapter has been mixed , but before moving on to the comments, we review what happened:

The chapter begins with the words of Deku and Tomura at the end of the world: “ You have already destroyed it ,” “ It will depend on what you do from now on .” Deku repeats the narrative of the first chapter with some differences: “ People are not born equal. Each of us is in a different shape or form, but despite all that, we still care about others. And these differences, both internal and external, allow us to run towards other people and look for a point of intersection .”

Kota enters the teacher's room. “ Brother Mido… Deku-sensei, where should we meet for the afternoon class? We then see that Deku is wearing a suit and writing in his notebook: “ This is the truth about society that I learned when I was 17. ” “ That day I heard everyone's voices, and that motivates me to this day. If caring for others is the first step to becoming a hero, everyone was the greatest hero .”

We see Deku coming home and smiling at Inko , All Might helping Gran Torino walk, the students taking exams and during the sports festival, Mirko trying out a new prosthetic , Mt. Lady and Kamui Woods working together, Shoji and Koda shaking hands with a heteromorphic scientist. Tokoyami and Hawks talking, Aizawa and Present Mic in a cemetery (probably visiting Shirakumo's grave) , Endeavor with his teammates, the students meeting Melissa, the League of Villains book being sold, Bakugo in rehab, Deku and Ochaco together in the snow with scarves , and Mr. Compress reading the book. Kota and Eri are also seen holding hands.

“ I had the opportunity to live a dream that should have been impossible. The story that began when my body moved before I could even think has come to an end along with the embers of One For All .” As Deku says this, we see panels showing the embers slowly fading away. We see some panels of the graduation and how they followed UA tradition Bakugo and Monoma blow up the stage after Iida's speech. The narration says: “ Do you want to know why I keep writing? Well, because there are a few pages left .”

Eight years later, we see Dai's class. The teacher asks the students what they want to be and one of them says that he is going to be a hero. One of the students sees that Dai wants to become a hero and tells him that he will never achieve it with his gift. He also says that there are fewer villains now and that the number of heroes has stabilized, so only the strongest kids have a chance.

Next, we see Ingenium, Froppy, Creati, and Uravity visiting schools across the country and the gift counseling expansion project created by Uraraka is considered one of the most essential aspects of today's society. We see a panel of Eri with her friends from the music club. Aizawa shows Deku a video of Bakugo yelling at a civilian for filming him too close. Aizawa says this will cause him to fall in the rankings and Todoroki will get ahead.

Deku says that he has barely seen his friends since graduation, since their days off don't coincide. On his way home from work, he watches official Tokoyami and Kirishima merchandise on TV. Dai recognizes Deku and tells him about his insecurities about the future and how he always goes to the All Might statue when he feels depressed. “ Can I become a hero like All Might and you? Deku remembers what he asked All Might a long time ago and begins to analyze Dai's gift in his usual way.

We see a text that says END, however, All Might destroys it. All Might apologizes for the delay. Deku says that he could have found him at the airport, but All Might wanted to give him a surprise gift. The data he obtained from his fight against AFO 8 years ago opened up so many possibilities. “ Technology evolves, and so do gifts ,” All Might says as he holds up a briefcase. Deku says this must have cost a lot, and All Might says it was developed by a friend of his from the US (probably David Shield or Melissa Shield), and Hatsume, funded by Class A alumni.

We see Hawks working and informed about a landslide on a road, to which he asks some heroes to solve it. Deku jumps up with his support item and when he looks down, he sees the ghost of Shigaraki. The final double panel shows the entire Class A as adults in their hero costumes (Aoyama is included). Deku can be seen wearing his new hero suit and has support items that we can assume will function similarly to One For All. “ This is the story of how we will continue to achieve new goals .”

This is how “Boku no Hero Academia” ends, after more than a decade in serialization. What did the fans think about it? Let's review the comments:

  • « I loved Boku no Hero Academia and it has been a big part of my life for the last ten years. Is that why I don't find this to be a satisfying ending? Maybe nothing would have been. There is no Deku's dad, Deku x Uraraka are not denied but not confirmed either. The last chapter was very nice but nothing was confirmed yet. All Might appearing in literally two panels in the last chapter? Just to give Deku some technology that allows him to still be a hero, which is cool, but we don't really know exactly what it is and it seems like it was added especially two pages before it said “END.” How can Deku be in his best shape if he hasn't worked as a hero in eight years? ».

  • « Not to mention, even with the advancement of technology that All Might mentioned, it was established early on that support items are only of so much use compared to raw power. It also seems more like a consolation prize out of pity than anything else. If it had been specified that the suit would slowly regain the abilities that One For All gave him to the point where he would not need the suit, I would be more satisfied .

  • « Yes, I don't want to be that person, but this is a boring and slightly disappointing ending. While I see why One For All left, since there's no more need for him with All For One gone, I agree with someone in the comments. Turning Deku into Iron Man is ridiculous, we don't even know what it entails, what it does, we never saw Deku use One For All at 100%. If they were going to turn him into Iron Man anyway in the last panel, why not let a spark of One For All stabilize so that he still has One For All but is weaker, doesn't grow stronger but also doesn't grow weaker? Also, the lack of All Might is notable, only making a cameo really. It would have been cool to have a page where Master Deku worked alongside Master All Might, like he wanted to work alongside All Might, just in a different way. No pairing was confirmed, which is a little disappointing, but I can understand it a little. I love this series, ever since the anime started airing, but this ending was unsatisfying and doesn't live up to the rest of the series and left me feeling a little empty instead of a satisfying ending ."

  • « 100% disappointing. Deku and Uraraka should have been confirmed with a happy wedding, especially after the chapter where he called her his hero .

  • « I think it's funny that Hori had the idea of doing an extended epilogue but somehow didn't include All Might or give a hint of how Deku compares now. And the world at large seemed to have forgotten about Deku's sacrifice, lol? How did he become the number 1 hero as the first chapter said? He tried to do a book ending and still ruined it. There was also a lot of flirting with Deku and Uraraka, especially with the last chapter, and nothing happened. It seems like a lot of wasted space .

  • « Maybe it's an unpopular opinion and I understand that's not exactly the point of the story. But is anyone else bitter that Deku simply lost his powerful Quirk to a guy he couldn't save and who dies anyway? He had the potential to go very far with everything he had in One For All. It would have been a sight to see it at full power. Sure, it's basically Iron Man, but the suit won't be immune to damage over time and will need money to be repaired over long periods of time. There were many ways that could have been thought of for Deku to maintain a quirk. When Shigaraki touched him, maybe the embers don't fade this time and he just has a fixed level of strength that doesn't grow or fade, Eri shows to have her horn back, if Mirio was able to get it back, Izuku too, some Overhaul material is reverted by Melissa to help him ».

  • « I am satisfied with it. I was prepared for the fact that the story would end with Deku without a quirk. And it makes sense. One For All's purpose was to take down All For One. Now that it has been done, the vestiges can finally be at peace in the afterlife. And I love that they gave Deku an “Iron Man” suit like the one All Might had. So he can still be in action and be with his friends. My only criticism of the ending… Where the hell is Deku's dad? ».

  • « It's not very satisfying, to be honest. A very cliché ending with no surprises, exciting moments or emotional payoffs to long-running plots (like Deku and Uraraka). A 6.5/10 finish .”

  • « I can't believe it's over. Honestly, I'll say that what Boku no Hero Academia did is exactly the same as what Attack on Titan did. Although did Horikoshi ever mention a sequel story? ».

  • « I just feel sad that Shoto didn't have a single line again. He was the only one who didn't have a word of encouragement for Deku in the final fight, his own resolution chapter being more about Endeavor than himself. I think Horikoshi dragged out and avoided showing Dabi's death just to omit giving Shoto any reaction for being the indirect cause of his own brother's death, while Ochako cried for letting herself be stabbed by Toga (whom she met twice before) lol , what a mess... Overall, Horikoshi's interest in writing about abusers instead of victims (applies to Shigaraki and All For One too, and even Deku and Bakugou in a way) was really the worst part of the manga for me , I will still remember it fondly, but as someone who got hooked on the sports festival in Season 2, it is really difficult to accept when you realize that the author has no interest in writing about your favorite character .

  • I still don't like that he lost One For All... So they went with the original ending of movie 2 with him losing One For All ."

  • « He's quirkless but he can still be a hero, which I think is fine. In the end, all Deku wanted to be was a hero... he didn't want a quirk, he wanted to be a hero and now he's doing it. I think it's a happy ending .

  • « We have Batman Deku and people complain. Curse ".

  • Deku should have at least kept the buildup portion of All For One. I understand that it needs to end at some point, but it seems rushed and just sad ."

  • « Everyone is talking about Deku losing his quirk, but no one is talking about how Deku has barely spoken to Class A for 8 YEARS. This is supposed to be a time where the heroes have “too much free time.” But apparently not enough time to hang out with Deku without a Quirk ."

  • « I would be lying if I said this was bad, but I would also be lying if I said it satisfied me. It's just an acceptable ending, honestly. "It doesn't do justice to the rest of the series and this epilogue doesn't compare to the rest of the arcs ."

  • Oh look, another ending to a top-notch manga ruined by a time jump to avoid answering questions ."

  • « I hate bad endings. Sigh, it seems like all manga endings these days are like this >:[ I knew it was coming, but Deku losing One For All still bothers me. I understand that it makes sense, but… no. And the lack of confirmation from Deku and Uraraka is quite annoying, I'm not going to lie .

  • « The Boku no Hero Academia series, in my opinion, is useless now with this ending. There is no reason to continue watching the anime knowing that the ending is going to be so unsatisfying .
