An AI generates anime in the style of Ufotable

Recently, an anime-style video created entirely with artificial intelligence (AI) has caused a stir on social media for its spectacular visual quality and fluid animation. The creator, known as “Naegiko – AI Creator,” shared this teaser on his Twitter account, describing the improvements of the new AI version “ Vidu 1.5 .”

In his post, “Naegiko” highlighted that the update introduces significant improvements:

  • Greater variety of styles .

  • Better handling of long shots and intricate movements .

  • Greater depth and fluidity in scenes .
The video was produced in 720p resolution using automatic mode, although the tool already supports 1080p quality. According to the creator, “the anime-style performance surpasses any other AI currently.”

While the video has been praised by some, it has also generated criticism and mixed opinions. Some comments highlighted the impressive graphical quality, with one user saying: “ It feels like it has even more potential than big-budget productions ” and another commenting: “ In about five years, this technology could be perfect .”

However, there was no shortage of detractors. Some pointed out recurring problems with AI-generated animation:

  • Lack of narrative coherence: “Although the images are beautiful, the scenes have no connection whatsoever.”

  • Movements lacking intention: “They just move for the sake of moving, they don’t convey emotion.”

  • Overly Obvious Influences: Several people noted similarities to characters from Hunter x Hunter and Kimetsu no Yaiba , as well as references to works by Makoto Shinkai and Studio Ghibli.

One user said: “ It’s a collage with no theme or purpose. Closer to a nightmare than a coherent work .” Another added: “ AI has yet to capture the ‘soul’ that human animators bring .”

The video for “Naegiko” brings to the fore the debate surrounding the use of AI in anime production. While some believe this technology will democratize access to high-quality animation, others see it as a threat to the creativity and employment of traditional artists. One comment that resonated was: “ This is an insult to cartoonist animators .”

Despite the criticism, many agree that the technology is still evolving rapidly. As one user commented: “ In a few years we could see commercial anime entirely generated by AI .” For now, the Vidu 1.5 tool offers a glimpse into the potential and limitations of AI-powered animation.
