CLAMP’s iconic “ xxxHOLiC ” series is set to make a comeback. The latest installment in the franchise, “ xxxHOLiC・戻 (Rei) ,” has been confirmed to resume serialization in Kodansha’s Young Magazine Issue 21, which goes on sale on April 21. This announcement marks the end of an over eight-year hiatus, as the work had been on hold since March 2017.

The original “xxxHOLiC” manga debuted in 2003 in Young Magazine, offering a mix of mysticism, drama, and philosophical musings that quickly captivated readers. The story follows Yuuko Ichihara, the mysterious owner of a wish-granting shop, and Kimihiro Watanuki, a young boy who can see spirits known as “Ayakashi.” Together, they explore the dark corners of human desires and the consequences of those desires.

The “xxxHOLiC” universe ties in closely with another of CLAMP’s most popular series, “Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE,” employing an interconnected narrative that was groundbreaking at the time. This narrative collaboration not only enriched both stories, but also highlighted CLAMP’s talent for creating complex, interrelated universes.

In 2009, the series adopted a new title, “ xxxHOLiC・籠 (Rou) ”, before concluding in 2011. However, in 2013, the group surprised fans with the release of the sequel “ xxxHOLiC・戻 (Rei) ”, which now picks up their story after years of uncertainty.

The popularity of “xxxHOLiC” was not limited to the manga. In 2006 and 2008, anime adaptations aired that further expanded its reach. In 2013, the work came to television drama format via WOWOW, and in 2022, a live-action film directed by Mika Ninagawa was released, offering a visually stunning reinterpretation of Yuuko and Watanuki’s world.

The suspension of “xxxHOLiC・戻” in 2017 left fans with many questions, especially since it was such a significant project in CLAMP’s career. The announcement of their return has been met with enthusiasm, and the anticipation for how the story will continue couldn’t be higher.

CLAMP, comprised of artists Satsuki Igarashi, Nanase Ohkawa, Tsubaki Nekoi, and Mokona, is renowned for its ability to create immersive universes and memorable characters. The return of “xxxHOLiC・戻” represents not only a continuation of one of its most iconic works, but also a new chapter for the relationship between the franchise and its fanbase.
