Warner
Bros. Japan and STUDIO4°C have revealed that college singer/songwriter AKASAKI
will be performing the theme song for the highly anticipated anime All You Need
is Kill. The song, titled "Tsuretette," was written exclusively for
this adaptation and marks AKASAKI's official anime debut.
World Screening at Annecy
The anime
will have its international premiere during the prestigious Annecy
International Animation Film Festival, which will be held in France from June
8-14. This will be a key opportunity to get to know this new interpretation of
the story, which will offer a different perspective to that of the original
novel and the Hollywood film Edge of Tomorrow.
A production by renowned names
The project
is directed by Kenichiro Akimoto, who has worked on productions such as
Children of the Sea and Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko. This new version will be
developed by the acclaimed STUDIO4°C animation studio, known for its
unconventional artistic and narrative approach.
The story that inspired Hollywood
Written by
Hiroshi Sakurazaka and illustrated by Yoshitoshi ABe, the novel All You Need is
Kill is set on a futuristic Earth overrun by aliens called Mimics. Humanity
fights using power suits, but is still losing the war. The protagonist, Keiji
Kiriya, dies in his first battle, only to wake up repeatedly on the same day,
trapped in a time loop. Through each reboot, Keiji grows stronger and becomes
closer to the enigmatic elite soldier Rita Vrataski.
A work with multiple adaptations
The novel
was published by Shueisha in December 2004, and Viz Media translated it into
English in 2009 as part of the launch of its Haikasoru imprint. In addition, in
2014, it was adapted into manga with art by Takeshi Obata (Death Note) and
script by Ryōsuke Takeuchi. That same year, Viz also published a full-color
graphic novel based on the work, written by Nick Mamatas and with art by Lee
Ferguson.
Edge of Tomorrow: the leap to the big screen
The
popularity of All You Need is Kill transcended borders in 2014 with the film
Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The film grossed over
$370 million worldwide, cementing its place as one of the most successful
sci-fi adaptations of the decade.
With the
participation of AKASAKI and direction by STUDIO4°C, this new version promises
to offer a unique and emotional take on the never-ending cycle of war, death
and personal evolution.
