Renowned
Japanese director Mamoru Hosoda has personally written a new
novel based on his hit 2006 anime film, The Girl Who Leapt
Through Time. KADOKAWA has confirmed that the work,
titled The Girl Who Leapt Through Time: A Novel based on the Animated
Film, will be published on August 29, 2025 in Japan.
A
literary milestone for Hosoda's work
This
release marks the first time that an official novel has been published
based directly on the 2006 animated version, written entirely by Hosoda. It
should be noted that, after the release of the film, a manga adaptation
illustrated by Kotone Ranmaru was published, but never a novel
as such until now.
Post
details
The novel
will have a total of 264 pages and will include eight
color pages with illustrations of settings and scenes from the film.
It will be priced at 3,080 yen (about US$21), and will include
a digital edition that will be available from the day of launch.
A link
to the original literary classic
Hosoda's
film is considered a sequel set 20 years after the original
science fiction novel written by Yasutaka Tsutsui in 1967,
which has been adapted several times in real image. In the film, Kazuko
Yoshiyama, the protagonist of the original book, appears as the aunt of the
new protagonist, Makoto Konno.
Official
synopsis of the novel
After
discovering his new ability, Makoto does what any teenager
would do: repeat exams, avoid embarrassing situations, and sleep in without
worrying about the consequences. But she soon realizes that her carefree time
travel is affecting the people who matter most to her. And when he understands
the damage he's caused, he only has a few jumps left to fix it all.
