Overwhelming
success in Japan
In Japan,
the film was released on July 18, selling more than 3.8
million tickets and grossing around $37.22 million in
its first three days. Adding the Marine Day holiday (July 21),
it reached $49.3 million over a four-day long weekend.
In its
first 25 days in theaters, it has sold 15.69 million tickets and
grossed approximately $148.7 million, surpassing One Piece
Film Red and placing itself as the sixth highest-grossing film in
history in Japan. For reference, Mugen Train achieved more
than $197 million in its first 24 days in 2020.
Unprecedented
global expansion
The film is
currently playing in 443 theaters in Japan — including IMAX
screenings — marking a record for the franchise. Outside the country, Aniplex plans
to release the film in more than 150 countries and regions,
surpassing the previous international tour of 145 territories.
Based on
the manga by Koyoharu Gotouge, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no
Yaiba debuted on television in 2019. It has since adapted arcs such
as Mugen Train, Entertainment District, Swordsmith
Village, and Hashira Training, with special episodes and
theatrical releases that have cemented the franchise as a global phenomenon.
The manga, completed in 2020, currently exceeds 200 million copies in
circulation globally.
