When one door closes, another literally opens in the world of military fantasy. Publisher AlphaPolis confirmed that the manga adaptation of the light novels Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri (Gate: The Self-Defense Forces Fight Like This in Another Land), illustrated by Satoru Sao, published its final chapter last September.
However, fans of
the JSDF (Japan Self-Defense Forces) won't have to wait long
for more action. It was revealed that Satoru Sao himself will be
in charge of drawing two new projects: the Gate 2 manga, based
on the novels of the second season (GATE SEASON2 Jieitai Kano Umi nite, Kaku
Tatakaeri), and the Gate Gaiden manga.
The original
adaptation began on the AlphaPolis website in 2011,
adapting Takumi Yanai's hit play. The series concluded its
print run with the release of the 18th compilation volume on November
17.
The original story
took us to the "Ginza Incident", where a dimensional portal brought
medieval monsters and knights to Tokyo. Led by otaku soldier Yōji Itami,
Japanese forces explored this new world filled with dragons, elves, and complex
politics.
What will
Gate 2 be about?
The sequel, based
on the novels published between 2017 and 2020, changes the setting from the
mainland to the high seas. The plot follows the reopening of the mysterious
"Gate", where the Self-Defense Forces continue their diplomatic
missions. The conflict erupts when an American journalist is kidnapped in the
turbulent seas of the Special Region, forcing an elite unit of the Maritime
Self-Defense Force to embark on a high-risk rescue mission.
With the original
anime airing between 2015 and 2016 (available on Crunchyroll) and
prequels like Gate 0 also in circulation, the franchise
continues to expand its dominance in the military isekai genre.
