The dispute over the reunification of Japan already has a date to reach our screens. Amazon Prime Video confirmed Tuesday that it will have the worldwide and exclusive distribution of the anime adaptation of Nippon Sangoku (also known as The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun), scheduling its premiere for April 5, 2026 in more than 240 countries and territories.

To warm up for this release, the production committee (which has the participation of Amazon MGM Studios) released a second trailer and a spectacular visual image starring Aoteru Misumi on a golden map of the Japanese archipelago. The video also lets us hear for the first time the opening theme of the series, "Hidane" (Flash Point), performed by the popular singer Tatsuya Kitani.

Nippon Sangoku Details

The animation work is being done by Studio Kafka, who already demonstrated their enormous visual talent with The Ancient Magus' Bride. The management team is top-notch: Kazuaki Terasawa occupies the director's chair, accompanied by the character designs of Takahiko Abiru (acclaimed for his work in Vinland Saga). To crown the technical section, the soundtrack is being composed by the award-winning Kevin Penkin (Made in AbyssThe Apothecary Diaries).

What is the story about?

The premise takes us to a near-future Japan where civilization has regressed drastically due to natural disasters, a devastating nuclear war, and utterly corrupt governance. The country has fractured into three great nations, ushering in a bloody new "Age of the Three Kingdoms."

In the midst of this chaos emerges Aoteru Misumi, an obscure young local bureaucrat who sets himself a seemingly impossible goal: the total reunification of Japan. With no physical strength for combat, Aoteru uses his vast intellect, knowledge, and exceptional eloquence to climb the ranks. This is the story of how the legend of the man who will later be known as a prodigious strategist begins.

About the work

The original manga, written and illustrated by Ikka Matsuki, began publication through the Manga ONE app and Shogakukan's Ura Sunday website in 2021. Its political and tactical plot was an immediate success, currently exceeding 700,000 copies in circulation.

The work has not gone unnoticed by critics: in 2023 it was nominated for the prestigious Manga Taisho awards (16th edition), appeared on Da Vinci magazine's "Book of the Year" list and managed to sneak into the Top 20 best manga for male readers in Takarajimasha's popular Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guide.
