The animation production falls to the facilities of the prestigious Production I.G. studio. The chief direction of the project is in charge of Shinji Ushiro, with Kenichiro Komaya as the main director. Eiji Umehara takes responsibility for the composition of the series and the scripts. About the work

The plot follows Yuma Ashihara, an eleven-year-old boy who, along with his entire sixth-grade class, becomes trapped inside a fully immersive virtual reality game called Actual Magic. What promised to be a playful experience quickly transforms into a nightmare where children must face giant monsters and deadly traps. The situation worsens when one of his companions is transformed into a beast, leaving as his only hope of survival the intervention of a powerful demon named Valac, who takes possession of the body of Sawa, Yuma's twin sister.

The original work was written by acclaimed author Reki Kawahara, who is world-renowned for creating the successful Sword Art Online franchise. The publication of these novels began in November 2022, releasing their fourth volume in December 2024. Its intricate dark fantasy and sci-fi narrative quickly inspired a manga adaptation that continues to expand this deadly virtual universe.
