In the
history of anime there have been many "for the first time", but this
one gets a special mention. Puuzaki Puuna, creator of the adult
doujin The Shy Snow Woman and the Cursed Ring (Hitozukiai
ga Nigate na Miboujin no Yuki Onna-san to Noroi no Yubiwa), has just
announced that her work will have an animated adaptation. And the reason why
this is historic is simple: never before has an adult doujin made the leap
straight to anime without first going through a commercial print edition or
getting locked into an exclusive video release.
What
makes this announcement special
Puuzaki
Puuna was very clear in pointing out the weight of what is happening. Other
adult doujins had received animated adaptations before, but in all of those
cases the result was a direct-sale video release, never a series that aired to
the general public. This anime breaks that ceiling and does so
starting directly from the original material without the need to go through a
commercial edition in between. The creator shared the announcement accompanied
by commemorative promotional images that she drew herself for the occasion,
which says a lot about the personal enthusiasm she has with the project.
One detail
worth noting is that the anime will not be a direct adaptation of the
doujin: it will include an original story different from the events of the
source material. This means that even those who have already read the two
published volumes will find new content, giving the project a life of its own
beyond being a simple animated translation of the existing pages. For now there
is no information about the animation studio, the voice cast or the release
date, so we will have to wait for future updates.

The Shy
Snow Woman and the Cursed Ring is a doujin by Puuzaki Puuna that began
publication in July 2021 and currently has two full-color volumes. The story
takes place in a world where humans and supernatural creatures live together,
and follows a young manager of an apartment building inhabited only by yokai.
One day he discovers a cursed ring with the power to control any supernatural
creature in sight, and decides to use it on Yukino, a shy yuki-onna
widow – snow spirit – who lives as a tenant in his building. What starts out as
a premise of supernatural romance quickly gets complicated by the questionable
morality of the ring involved.
