Aniplex's production committee has no intention of letting this prolific literary franchise rest. After having aired the first batch of episodes last year, the animated adaptation of Monogatari Series: Off & Monster Season officially confirmed the production of a new supernatural tale. This is Wazamonogatari: Karen Ogre, an episode that will land on Japanese television during the winter season of 2026 and that has already presented its first promotional art focused on the energetic sister of the protagonist.
Unlike the dense story arcs focused on deities
and abstract eccentricities, this new installment puts the focus directly on
physical exhaustion. The plot will follow Karen Araragi, now a freshman, as she
embarks on a demanding solitary retreat in the mountains. Following his
teacher's strict instructions, his goal is to take his martial arts training to
the next level, a journey of self-improvement that is perfectly portrayed in
the visual material revealed this week.
Shaft Veterans Retain Creative Control
To ensure that the surreal aesthetic and
dizzying camera cuts remain intact, Studio Shaft once again
summoned its elite squad. Akiyuki Shinbo retains his
hierarchical rank as chief director, leaving Midori Yoshizawa in charge of the
specific direction of this episode. On the narrative side, Fuyashi Tou
continues to sculpt the monologues of the scripts, while the unmistakable
visual style falls back on the shoulders of Akio Watanabe, who
serves as character designer and chief animation supervisor.
A printed universe that seems to have no end
The commercial longevity of the work written by
Nisioisin is worthy of study in the industry. What began in 2006 with the two
volumes of Bakemonogatari quickly evolved into a sales
monster. Although the main narrative supposedly concluded in 2014 with Zoku
Owarimonogatari, the author continued to expand the universe with the Off
Season and Monster Season stages, exploring Koyomi Araragi's college life, and
collecting various short stories. The definitive proof that this license
continues to print money is that his most recent light novel, Tsugimonogatari,
hit Japanese shelves only in October 2025.
