Unlike many authors in the industry who end up pausing their works due to health problems or overwork, the creator of one of the most famous romantic comedies of the last decade decided to end his career for an enviable reason: he has already accumulated enough money to retire peacefully. Yomi Hirasaka, the mind behind Haganai (Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai), officially confirmed that he will not write light novels again after the publication of the tenth and final volume of his most recent work, A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics (Henjin no Salad Bowl).
The author
himself clarified that his retirement is not due to creative blocks or physical
or mental health problems, but because he managed to achieve the financial goal
he had set for himself. Applying the concept known as FIRE (Financial
Independence and Early Retirement), Hirasaka decided to retire from the
publishing world with the satisfaction of having completed absolutely all his
main stories without leaving anything halfway.
As he
explained, the A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics project was conceived from day
one as his final work within the light novels. After the good reception of his
anime adaptation broadcast in 2024 and the successful closure of the tenth
volume last July, the writer considered that it was the perfect time to step
aside and enjoy the fruits of his labor.
Yomi
Hirasaka began his career in 2004 after winning an award of excellence in the
first MF Bunko J light novel competition with his work Haunted!.
However, its absolute consecration came in 2009 with the launch of Haganai,
a series that became the best-selling light novel in Japan during 2011,
exceeding seven million copies in circulation and having two anime adaptations
along with various derivative projects.
Subsequently,
the author maintained his popularity among readers with the comedy A
Sister's All You Need (Imouto sae Ireba Ii.) between 2015 and 2020,
which also made the leap to the small screen. With an impeccable track record
full of commercial successes and animated adaptations, Hirasaka says goodbye to
the industry leaving an indelible legacy in the urban comedy genre.
