The official site for the "latest series" of live-action movies based on the Nobuhiro Watsuki manga, Rurouni Kenshin, it was announced that the premiere of the two films will be delayed until 2021.

According to the statement, the films Rurouni Kenshin Saishuushou The Final and Rurouni Kenshin Saishuushou The Beginning, which were scheduled to premiere on July 3 and August 7, respectively, will now be released after the April 2021 vacation period.

Director Keishi Ohtomo noted that the recording studio had to temporarily close its doors in response to the declaration of a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. As a result, the staff was unable to complete post-production work, preparations for the film's release, or other important tasks. In addition, with these new release dates, Ohtomo aims to increase the quality of the final product.

The first film will focus on the story of the "Jinchuu Arc" from the original manga, spanning Kenshin's conflict with the mysterious drug dealer Enishi. The second movie will tell the story of how Kenshin got his cross scar.

For his part, Watsuki published the original manga in Shueisha magazine's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine between 1994 and 1999. The work inspired an adaptation of the anime aired in Japan between 1996 and 1998, as well as numerous OVAs and an animated film.
