After the broadcast of the last episode of the anime adaptation of the  NieR: Automata video game , titled  NieR: Automata Ver. 1.1a , it was announced that the series will have a second cour (season) accompanied by a trailer for it. The statement did not reveal a release date for this sequel.

The anime adaptation went on hiatus after the eighth episode premiered in March this year due to the impact of the COVID  -19  pandemic on the production schedule. The series had already gone on hiatus after the third episode, and the fourth episode returned to Japanese broadcast and streaming on February 18. The last four episodes (9-12) aired consecutively on July 23.

It should be noted that in an interview between the animation director of the series  Ryoji Matsuyama  and the creator of the video game  Yoko Taro , it was explained that this project will not be a faithful adaptation of the game, but that it will be a completely original story, starring the iconic characters of this franchise. In its time, the game was praised for its story and themes, its gameplay, and its music.  Some visual and technical problems were criticized, but sales exceeded expectations; as of July 2021, the game had sold over 6 million copies worldwide.
