An old interview with Tatsuki Fujimoto, the celebrated
author of “ Chainsaw Man ” and “ Fire
Punch ,” has resurfaced on social media and started trending due to an
unusual idea for a romantic comedy that the author shared in 2020. Despite the interview being conducted several
years ago for French magazine ATOM, Fujimoto’s statement has only
recently gained traction online, fueled by the rising popularity of another
anime with a similar premise, “ Makeine:
Too Many Losing Heroines! “ , which has captured attention
both inside and outside of Japan.
In the
interview, Fujimoto was asked if he was already thinking of possible new
stories while working on “Chainsaw Man.” His answer surprised many, as he described an idea for a romantic
comedy with a macabre twist:
- « I have some ideas,
yes. In particular, I have a story that would start out as a
romantic comedy, with several heroines at the beginning, but only one of
them would manage to find love. Discouraged, the other girls would commit
suicide and return as materialized evil spirits to haunt the everyday life
of the one who got a boyfriend. Do you like it? »
This premise quickly
sparked interest among fans, who were struck by the dark and twisted approach
Fujimoto envisioned for what initially sounded like a traditional romantic
comedy. The idea of “loser heroines” who not only fail to find love
but also become vengeful entities resonated with many followers on social media ,
highlighting the unpredictable and unconventional character of the Chainsaw Man
creator.
Even though the
interview dates back to early 2020, Fujimoto’s response has gone viral
again in 2024, due to the recent popularity of the anime “Makeine: Too Many
Losing Heroines!”, which shares a “loser heroines” concept , albeit
without the dark overtones that Fujimoto proposed. Makeine has become a
phenomenon both in Japan and internationally, featuring a plot that narrates
what happened after the main girls were rejected by their respective love
interests.
